Ubuntu is an open source operating system based on Linux. In case you have lost your ubuntu password, this article is going to help you to recover the password and get access to your ubuntu system back.

Follow the below steps to recover ubuntu password:

  • Turn on you Ubuntu as soon as it starts it will show you a Grub menu.Now Grub(GRand Unified Boot-loader) is a boot-loader which helps to load multiple operating system. If you don’t see the Grub Menu just after booting press and hold shift key while booting till the menu appears.1


  • Now, Select the “Advanced options for Ubuntu” option and press Enter.2


  • Select “Recovery mode” and then press Enter.3


  • Now You will be presented with the menu, From this menu select “root” and Press Enter.6


  • Now Once You press Enter, on the bottom of the window you will be presented with a shell. Write the following command in the shell.
    • ls /home
    • passwd user
    • Now prompt for the new password will appear. Write the new passwd and its done.7

  • But As the above image shows the error appear and it says “Authentication token manipulation error” This error is due to state/permission of root which is READ ONLY! As you can see the above image, it is written as the heading “Recovery menu (filesystem state: read only)”
  • Now to fix this problem we have to remount the root with read/write permission and to do so we use the following command->
    • mount -o remount,rw /       or        mount -rw -o remount / . Both commands work same you can use any one of them both.
    • Now you can run the above commands again to change the passwd for the root.11
